Safety

Both the Silverado EV and Hummer EV Pickup have Rear Cross Traffic Alert, but the Silverado EV has Rear Cross Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Hummer EV Pickup’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Silverado EV and the Hummer EV Pickup have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and available driver alert monitors.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are better in initial quality than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet second in initial quality, above the industry average. With 41 more problems per 100 vehicles, GMC is ranked 20th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 32 more problems per 100 vehicles, GMC is ranked 18th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Chevrolet 4 places higher in reliability than GMC.

The Silverado EV RST’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Hummer EV Pickup’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Silverado EV RST has standard 24-inch wheels. The Hummer EV Pickup’s largest wheels are only 22-inches.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Silverado EV’s wheelbase is 10.1 inches longer than on the Hummer EV Pickup (145.7 inches vs. 135.6 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Silverado EV RST w/rear wheel steering’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the Hummer EV Pickup 2’s (42.2 feet vs. 44.3 feet).

Passenger Space

The Silverado EV RST’s driver’s power window opens or closes with one touch of the window control. The Hummer EV Pickup’s driver’s power window switch has to be held the entire time to close it fully.

Recommendations

The Chevrolet Silverado outsold the GMC Hummer EV Pickup by over 167 to one during 2023.
