Both the Escalade IQ and G-Class have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Escalade IQ has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The G-Class’ child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Escalade IQ has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The G-Class doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

A passive infrared night vision system standard on the Escalade IQ Premium helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The G-Class doesn’t offer a night vision system.

Both the Escalade IQ and the G-Class have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Cadillac Escalade IQ weighs 2083 to 3586 pounds more than the Mercedes G-Class. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Cadillac’s powertrain warranty covers the Escalade IQ 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than Mercedes covers the G-Class. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the G-Class ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The Escalade IQ’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the G-Class’ (6 vs. 5 years).

There are over 46 percent more Cadillac dealers than there are Mercedes dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the Escalade IQ’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Cadillac vehicles are better in initial quality than Mercedes vehicles. With 10 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Cadillac higher than Mercedes.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Cadillac vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Cadillac above average in long-term dependability. With 33 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Mercedes is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that Cadillac vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Cadillac 1 place higher in reliability than Mercedes.

The Escalade IQ’s electric motors produces 307 more horsepower (750 vs. 443) and 372 lbs.-ft. more torque (785 vs. 413) than the G 550’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid. The Escalade IQ’s electric motors produces 173 more horsepower (750 vs. 577) and 158 lbs.-ft. more torque (785 vs. 627) than the AMG G 63’s standard 4.0 turbo V8 hybrid. The Escalade IQ’s electric motors produces 171 more horsepower (750 vs. 579) than the G 580’s standard electric motors.

As tested in Motor Trend the Cadillac Escalade IQ is faster than the G 550 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid:

The Escalade IQ can travel longer on a full charge than the G 580 on electricity, only, (460 miles vs. 239 miles).

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Cadillac Escalade IQ higher (10 out of 10) than the Mercedes G-Class (4 to 10). This means the Escalade IQ produces up to 25 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the G-Class every 15,000 miles.

For better traction, the Escalade IQ has larger tires than the G-Class (275/50R24 vs. 265/60R18).

The Escalade IQ’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the G-Class’ 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Escalade IQ has standard 24-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the G-Class. The G-Class’ largest wheels are only 21-inches.

The Cadillac Escalade IQ’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Mercedes G-Class only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Escalade IQ has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The G-Class doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

For superior ride and handling, the Cadillac Escalade IQ has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Mercedes G-Class has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

The front and rear suspension of the Escalade IQ uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the G-Class, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Escalade IQ has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Escalade IQ’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The G-Class doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Escalade IQ’s wheelbase is 22.4 inches longer than on the G-Class (136.2 inches vs. 113.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Escalade IQ is 4 inches wider in the front and 4 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the G-Class.

The Escalade IQ Sport handles at .71 G’s, while the G 550 pulls only .62 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Escalade IQ Premium Sport executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.2 seconds quicker than the G 550 (27.6 seconds @ .67 average G’s vs. 29.8 seconds @ .58 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Escalade IQ’s turning circle is 4.5 feet tighter than the AMG G 63’s (39.8 feet vs. 44.3 feet).

The design of the Cadillac Escalade IQ amounts to more than styling. The Escalade IQ has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .321 Cd. That is significantly lower than the G-Class (.55) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Escalade IQ get better fuel mileage.

For excellent aerodynamics, the Escalade IQ has standard flush composite headlights. The G-Class has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The front grille of the Escalade IQ uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The G-Class doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Escalade IQ uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The G-Class doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Escalade IQ has standard seating for 7 passengers; the G-Class can only carry 5.

The Escalade IQ has 54.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the G-Class (161.9 vs. 107).

Pressing a switch automatically lowers the Escalade IQ’s second and third row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The G-Class doesn’t offer automatic folding second row seats.

The Escalade IQ’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The G-Class’ swing out door blocks loading from the driver’s side.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Escalade IQ’s power cargo door can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Escalade IQ’s power cargo door can also be opened or closed by pressing a button. The G-Class doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening cargo door.

The Escalade IQ’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the G-Class’ (7500 vs. 7000 pounds).

The Escalade IQ has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, navigation instruction, infotainment and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The G-Class doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Escalade IQ Premium’s power side swing out doors make it much easier to load and unload kids and cargo. One touch opens the door, before you even get to the sport utility. The G-Class doesn’t offer a power rear door.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Escalade IQ has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the G-Class only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Escalade IQ has standard extendable sun visors. The G-Class doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Escalade IQ to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The G-Class doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Escalade IQ has standard front air-conditioned seats and offers them optionally in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The G-Class doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

Both the Escalade IQ and the G-Class offer available massaging front seats. The Escalade IQ also offers optional massaging second row seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging rear seats aren’t available in the G-Class.

The Cadillac Escalade IQ stands out above the Mercedes G-Class by offering not one, but two Qi-compatible phone chargers in the front seat. This convenience helps travelers with multiple devices to keep powered up on the go. Wireless charging eliminates lost or cluttered charging cables and one of them provide more flexibility. The Escalade IQ Premium also offers an optional two-device Qi charging system for the second row seat and the G-Class doesn’t.

The Escalade IQ has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The G-Class doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Escalade IQ’s Enhanced Automatic Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Auto Parking will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The G-Class’ automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.

Motor Trend selected the Escalade IQ as their 2026 Sport Utility of the Year. The G-Class has never been chosen.

The Cadillac Escalade outsold the Mercedes G-Class by almost five to one during 2025.
